John’s work is characterised by a freshness and freedom, evident in his painterly platters and his thrown and altered hand-built vessels. He enjoys the potential complexity of clay structures, cutting and altering to create interesting profiles and silhouettes, and using surface treatments for energetic interactions of drawing and gestural glazing.

Masterclass Overview

This intensive two-day workshop is designed for ceramicists eager to infuse their work with new energy and explore innovative techniques under John’s expert guidance.

Day 1: Throwing Large and Creating

Textures you’ll engage in hands-on sessions focusing on throwing large forms, emphasising the importance of scale and proportion. John will demonstrate methods to create dynamic textures, drawing inspiration from contemporary architecture and natural forms.

Day 2: Reconstructing Work and Injecting Energy

The second day will delve into reconstructing thrown pieces, encouraging you  to experiment with cutting and altering forms to inject energy and movement into your work. John will share his techniques for assembling and finishing pieces, highlighting the expressive potential of clay.
