Jane Cairns is a London-based ceramic artist whose work captures the beauty in the overlooked and the ordinary. Inspired by urban landscapes and industrial fragments, her pieces celebrate weathered surfaces, worn textures, and the sculptural qualities of functional forms removed from their original context. We’re so excited to have Jane joining us at The Waldron to share her passion for sculptural ceramics.

Explore the transformative process of slab-built ceramic sculpture with Jane Cairns, a renowned ceramic artist celebrated for her ability to find quiet beauty in the overlooked. Her work draws inspiration from urban environments, translating weathered surfaces and industrial fragments into evocative ceramic forms that merge abstraction with familiarity.

This masterclass invites you to journey through Jane’s creative process. Over two immersive days, you’ll learn to observe and reimagine your surroundings as a source of artistic inspiration. Jane will guide you in using slab-building techniques to craft unique sculptural pieces. From initial sketches to the final construction, you’ll discover how to shape clay slabs into expressive forms, exploring texture, balance, and composition along the way.

Jane will also demonstrate how surface details, such as layering glazes and using slips, can evoke the weathered textures she draws from her urban inspirations. Using her signature techniques, which include printing directly from textured surfaces, participants will bring their ideas to life while embracing the element of chance inherent in the medium.

Whether you’re a seasoned ceramicist or a curious beginner, this workshop promises a rewarding creative experience. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of slab-building methods, your own completed ceramic work, and fresh insights into observing the world through an artist’s lens.
