Bert Jones, an accomplished ceramic artist from South Wales, we’re delighted he’ll be joining us at The Waldron to lead an inspiring masterclass designed for those seeking to deepen their connection with clay.

Known for his minimalist stoneware, Bert’s work embodies a serene aesthetic, balancing simplicity with rich textures and subdued tones. Participants will explore his philosophy of “material agency,” experiencing clay as a living medium and uncovering how subtle forms and natural textures can evoke timeless beauty.

Through hands-on demonstrations and guided practice, Bert will share his techniques for wheel-throwing to create both refined and rugged forms in a varieties of clays.

Your Course

This two-day masterclass offers a combination of  hands-on practice and demonstrations, allowing you to develop your throwing skills using a variety of clays and techniques.

Exploring the themes of Rugged, Regulated and Refined you’ll experiment with material correspondence through throwing, trimming and slipping textured stoneware clays.

During this masterclass you’ll develop your approach to form and gain an understanding of how to create energy and life in your wheel thrown work.

Day 1

  • Introduction to covering making as ‘correspondence’ (from Tim Ingold’s Making (2013) and the refinement myth.
  • Introducing the clays you’ll be working with: V9A (smooth); Grogged pink (groggy);Coarse raku (VERY groggy)
  •  Demonstration including; throwing fundamentals; approaches to bowl throwing in each clay body with the rugged Vs regulated dichotomy in mind; demonstrating both rugged and regulated bowls in each stoneware body
  • Remainder of the day spent throwing forms, focussing on refining technique and confidence on the wheel.

Day 2

  • Demonstration: Approaches to trimming: chucks, tool selection and moisture content (stages of leather hard)
  • Practical workshop: trimming the previous days work
  • Demonstration: Slip decoration approaches: pouring, trailing and brushing.
  • Greenware gallery: set up a temporary exhibition of the work produced, freshly slipped and gloriously green.

  • Suitable for: Intermediate (some experience of throwing required)
  • Timings: 2-Day masterclass from 10am – 4.30pm
