Masterclass: Expressive Ceramics with Barry Stedman

Join Barry Stedman for an inspiring two-day masterclass.   This workshop offers a rare opportunity to explore Barry’s instinctive and expressive approach to ceramics, rooted in his connection to nature and the ever-changing landscapes surrounding his Bedfordshire studio.

Day 1 begins with an introduction to Barry’s creative process, where you’ll learn about his techniques for throwing and hand-building with red earthenware clay. Barry will demonstrate how he shapes his vessels using the wheel and slab construction, often altering and marking the forms to create raw, tactile surfaces. Participants will then explore these methods hands-on, crafting their own forms inspired by spontaneity and the natural world.

Day 2 You’ll refine your pieces and then delve into Barry’s vibrant use of colour. You’ll have time to explore the beautiful landscape surrounding The Waldron as inspiration for your own pieces.  You will will then experiment with layering slips and oxides to develop rich, expressive surfaces, learning how to apply colour in instinctive, dynamic ways. Through Barry’s guidance, you’ll begin to see how colour can enhance the character of your work and evoke the rhythms of the environment.
