Your Course

Join renowned ceramicist Barbara Gittings for an immersive three-day masterclass at The Waldron, where you’ll delve into the world of Nerikomi. Barbara’s innovative of this ancient technique with contemporary forms has established her as a distinctive voice in the field of ceramics.

Unlike traditional Japanese Nerikomi, which often emphasises precise geometric repetition, Barbara’s creations embrace abstraction and asymmetry, subtly referencing geometric patterns.

In this masterclass, Barbara will guide you through her unique process, which balances meticulous technique with spontaneous application. You’ll explore the elemental unpredictability inherent in working with clay, particularly the random shifts and reactions that occur during pattern creation.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn the fundamentals of Nerikomi, including clay preparation, colouring, and pattern formation.
  • Create your own Nerikomi, applying both structured and experimental approaches to design and form.
  • Engage in discussions on the philosophy behind Barbara’s, exploring themes of order and chaos, control and spontaneity.

This masterclass is designed for ceramic enthusiasts of all levels who are eager to expand their skills and explore new creative avenues. By the end of the three days, you’ll have a deeper appreciation for the interplay between technique and intuition, as well as your own handcrafted pieces that reflect the unique processes you’ve learned.
