Introducing The Waldron: Celebrating the Best of Contemporary Ceramics
22nd November
The Waldron, an exciting new ceramics gallery and studio, is set to open its doors the heart of rural East Sussex in December 2024. Nestled within a stunning 15th-century converted barn, The Waldron promises to become a dynamic hub for ceramic art, offering masterclasses with some of the UK’s leading ceramicists and showcasing contemporary ceramic works in its gallery space.
Founded by Helen Marriott Smith, a seasoned marketing and events professional with experience at prestigious events such as the London Art Fair and New Designers, and Thea Thompson, a chartered landscape architect, The Waldron merges creative passion with a strong curatorial vision. Both Helen and Thea are practicing ceramists who have brought their expertise to their new venture.
The Waldron’s 2025 season of ceramic masterclasses is now open for booking online at www.thewaldron.co.uk. This unique programme will offer hands-on learning experiences from some of the UK’s most celebrated ceramicists, including Dan Kelly, Barry Steadman, Stephan Murfitt, Tanya Gomez, John Higgins, Linda Bloomfield, Dee Barnes, Chris Keenan, Elaine Bolt, Bert Jones, Patricia Shone, Jane Cairns, and Sarah Rickard, among many others. These revered artists will share their knowledge in exclusive classes designed to inspire both budding and experienced ceramists.
We’ve brought together a dream roster of artists whose work is not only technically superb but also beautifully expressive,” says co-founder Helen Marriott Smith. “Our masterclasses offer an intimate, hands-on experience with these exceptional talents, in a space that feels both historic and inspiring.
In addition to the studio, The Waldron boasts a dedicated gallery space that will exhibit the work of internationally acclaimed contemporary ceramicists. The gallery will host a series of artist talks and events, bringing collectors, ceramic enthusiasts, and makers together in a vibrant, creative setting. The Waldron’s online gallery will also launch in early 2025, making this stunning collection accessible to a global audience.
We’re so excited to create a destination for ceramics lovers,” says co-founder Thea Thompson. “The beauty of The Waldron’s location and our deep connection to the craft make this space unique. We want it to be a place where art is both made and appreciated, where people come to learn, discover, and be inspired.
Located in the picturesque countryside of East Sussex, The Waldron offers a serene retreat for visitors, set against the backdrop of the area’s natural beauty and rich history. With its carefully curated masterclasses and gallery exhibitions, The Waldron is poised to become a significant cultural destination in the ceramics world.
