Linda Bloomfield

Linda Bloomfield is a celebrated ceramic artist and glaze expert known for her tactile, handmade porcelain tableware. Her distinctive style features a matte satin glaze on the outside with color on the inside, giving her work an inviting, haptic quality that reflects the “hand of the maker.” Bloomfield’s ceramics frequently incorporate visible throwing lines and dimples, enhancing the natural, organic feel of her creations.

Originally trained as a materials scientist with a background in engineering, Bloomfield brings a scientific approach to her art, particularly in glaze chemistry. Her in-depth understanding of ceramic materials allows her to create custom glazes, emphasising translucent colours achieved through oxides rather than commercial stains. This unique approach results in subtle, layered effects that make her work recognisable and highly regarded within the ceramics community.

Beyond her studio work, Bloomfield is an author and educator. She has written several influential books on glaze science and pottery, including guides that help both novice and seasoned potters understand glaze chemistry and troubleshoot issues in ceramic firing. Her books, such as Colour in Glazes and Science for Potters, have become essential resources in ceramics education. She also teaches workshops and lectures widely, sharing her expertise on glaze formulation and the science behind special effects glazes.

Based in London, Bloomfield is dedicated to sustainable practices, firing her porcelain in electric kilns powered by green energy and recycling materials to reduce waste. Her work is exhibited in galleries across the UK, and she has been featured in several major exhibitions, including at Messums West and the Quenington Sculpture Exhibition.
