Jane Cairns
Jane Cairns is a London-based ceramic artist whose work captures the beauty in the overlooked and the ordinary.
Inspired by urban landscapes and industrial fragments, Jane’s pieces celebrate weathered surfaces, worn textures, and the sculptural qualities of functional forms removed from their original context. Jane often draws from the “edgelands” of cities, those liminal spaces where the built environment meets abandonment and decay, creating a visual dialogue between familiarity and abstraction
Her practice emphasises an element of chance, combining technical precision with the unpredictable nature of ceramics. Cairns uses slab-building techniques, mono-printing with textured surfaces, and layered glazes to mimic the natural wear and transformation seen in her sources. This approach allows her to imbue her sculptural ceramics with a tactile, almost poetic presence, making each piece a reflection of both process and inspiration.
A member of the artist-led collective haptic/tacit, Cairns has exhibited extensively across the UK, including events like Ceramic Art London and group shows highlighting modern craft. Based at Thames Side Studios in London, she balances her studio practice with teaching, sharing her unique perspective on observing and interpreting the world through ceramics.
Her work reinterprets the familiar, offering viewers an intimate encounter with the unnoticed beauty of everyday life.
